The lesson of the Fig Tree was not just for the first generation of Christians.  It is for all of us.  Jesus hates fruitlessness.

Can You Recommend a Good Bible Study Method?

cup of coffee no borderI recently had someone ask me to recommend a Bible Study method.  She was wanting to get back to being in the Word herself, and also wanted to introduce a Bible Study method to the high school youth group she was working with.

Her question got me to thinking that there might be a few more people who have that same question – so I’m passing on my answer to you – in hopes you will find it helpful for yourself, or pass it on to someone else who might be wondering this, too:

  1. First – and most important – just do this:  read your Bible every day.  There is no substitute for reading  your Bible every day.    How long you read, or where you read, or what books or media you might use to help you understand what you read…these are up to you and will probably change with time….but just get alone and read your Bible every day.   Do it for the rest of your life.
  2. Then….

How to Study Your BibleOne really great method  of Bible Study is called “inductive Bible Study”.  It’s an awesome discipline for digging in and applying God’s Word to your every-day life.

Kay Arthur has written a great book on it:  “How to Study Your Bible”, published by Harvest House.  Click on the picture to the left to find it on the internet.

As Jesus enters Jerusalem, in this event we now call the “Triumphal Entry”, and “Palm Sunday”, all kinds of prophecies are being fulfilled.  It’s nearly blinding –  like flashbulbs popping at a celebrity photo-shoot.

Kathleen’s Greenwood Library Bible Study – the Book of Genesis

Greenwood Public Library on Old MeridianOur Greenwood library Women’s Bible study on Old Meridian is currently studying the book of Genesis. We are covering about a chapter a week, so anyone is welcome to jump in at any time this next year.

We meet Tuesday afternoons at 1pm at the library, and we usually end promptly at 2pm.  We reserve a meeting room just off the main entrance  – there are no stairs to climb or elevators to take.

If you want to see our questions and Teaching notes for each chapter of Genesis, click here.  I will post them each week .

Led by Kathleen Dalton, our group of about 20 women sits in a semi-circle of tables, open our Bibles, and read through the chapter, discuss it, ask questions, and engage in some pretty lively conversation.  Not a week goes by without a lot of laughter and opinions.  We don’t always agree on everything, but we do agree that the Bible is true, and we want to learn and be changed by God’s Word.

This Bible study is sponsored by Village Bible Church in Greenwood, where Kathleen and many of the members of this group attend.  Attendance at Village Bible or any other church is not necessary for being a part of the Bible study group.

Then the mother of Zebedee’s sons came to Him with her sons, kneeling down and asking something from Him.  And He said to her, “What do you wish?”  She said to Him, “Grant that these two sons of mine may sit, one on Your right hand and the other on the left, in Your kingdom.”

“Have I had an Extreme Makeover?  When I decided to follow Jesus, did I make the decision to believe in Him and follow Him, no matter what?  Or did I just come to understand the story?  What “gods” did I turn away from?”

Not because we are “legalistic” and living by a set of rules which will make God happy with us, but because we know how very much He loves the believers He has died for….we take a good look at our lives and make decisions….so that we won’t offend or lead astray or in any way hurt the “little ones” – the other believers in Jesus.

Sometimes it may seem like our lives are a series of “mountaintops” and “valleys”.  When we’re on the mountaintop, we see Jesus clearly and we feel surrounded by His glory and His power.  When we’re in the valley, we see ourselves more clearly, and we are painfully aware of our inabilities, and how much we do not understand.

Let’s describe the commitment that Jesus is asking from His disciples:

There is coming a time when it will be easy to be His follower…but right now the price will be tremendous.  In order to use the keys of the kingdom you will need to lay your life on the line.  Not just theoretically, but actually.   There’s no middle line – either you decide to lay down your life for the privilege of using those keys – or you truly don’t want to be His follower.

I heard a story once of a group of people who wanted to bring the message of Jesus to gay people.  They decided that the best place to do this would be in a gay bar.

Now maybe this isn’t something you or I would have thought of doing…or something we wouldn’t have any idea how to do…but this group of believers had an idea.

They would go, two-by-two, into a gay bar, get something non-alcoholic to drink at the bar, then hang out.  Just standing around either making conversation with people, or listening to music, etc.

Each of the believers wore a small badge – which said:

I am willling badge

If anyone in that gay bar wanted to ask them what the badge was all about, they would explain that they considered talking about Jesus the most important conversation topic in the world…and they just wanted people to know they weren’t afraid to discuss the subject.

Yes, some people got mad.  But others were genuinely curious, and this group of believers got many opportunities to tell the story of Jesus to a group of people who were not in their usual circle of friends, and never would have stepped into a church.

So….was this group of believers disobeying God by being seen in a bar…and a gay bar at that?  Or were they obeying God by finding a kind and non-in-your-face-way to spread the news about Jesus?
